Population and dissenters: In this Parish there may be from 650 to 700 Families. Of these 200 or upwards may be Dissenters, Presbyterians and Independents, Anabaptists, Quakers, and French Calvinists. There are three Licensd Meeting Houses; One, of Presbyterians taught by Mr Moor, one of French Calvinists taught by Monsieur Bordice, and a Quaker's Meeting.
Public or charity schools: There is one Charity School with 17 Boys and 28 Girls, partly supported by the Interest of 510 Pounds lodgd in one of the Publick Funds for their use, and otherwise maintain'd by Annual Subscriptions of the Inhabitants. Proper Care is taken to instruct them in the Principles of the Xtian Religion, and they are duly brought to Church on Sundays, Holy-Days, and Lecture Days.
Alms-house, hospital or charitable endowment: There are in this Parish two Alms-houses; One, for twelve Widows, supported by Lands (the Gift of the late Joseph Jory Esq) at present under the Care of Mr Buttall, the only surviving Trustee. The other unendow'd; the Poor of which are provided for by Weekly Allowances from the work-house in St. Andrew's Parish. I know of no Abuse or Fraud committed in the Management of these Charities. No Lands or Tenements left for the Repair of the Church.
Residence upon cure: I do reside personally upon this Cure. There is no Parsonage House. Many Years ago a House was given to the Vicar of this Parish, very incommodious for Him to live in as it lies in the Parish of St. Andrew's. It is tenanted and in Good Repair.
Curate: I, Oliver Gregory, am Curate. I am duly qualified according to the Canons. Mr Boughton, the Vicar of this Parish, unable (thro' the Infirmities of Old Age) to perform any the least Part of Parochial Duty, hath in Consideration of my taking Care of the whole, empower'd Me to receive all the Profits arising from the Vicaridge out of which by Agreement, I pay Him the clear Summ of £30 a year by Equal Quarterly Payments.
Frequency of divine service: Divine Service is perform'd in Charles Church on Wednesdays in the Afternoon only, on Fridays both Forenoon and Afternoon, with two Sermons Ev'ry Sunday, and an Exposition on the Gospel every Holy-day.
Frequency of communion: The Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is administer'd in Charles Church sometimes nine, and sometimes ten Times ev'ry year.
Number of communicants: Dissenters of Ev'ry Kind included, there may be near two thousand three hundred Communicants, two hundred of these and upwards usually receive at the Church; at the three great Festivals, and in particular at Easter last past, I believe 300 or more.
Catechising of children: Not at all for these many years past; because the Charity Children of this Parish, both Boys & Girls, together with the Blue, Red and Green Boys of the other Parish are publickly catechisd in St Andrew's Church. The Parishioners for many years back have not sent their Children to Church to say their Catechism; for this Reason not unlikely, because it is a prevailing Practice amongst the Parents (some of them I know who do so) to catechise their Children at home.
